What it means for you
AI search isn't a niche any more. Your customers are already asking AI tools for recommendations, so your business needs to be one of the answers.
Google, AI Overviews and clicks
Google is still the biggest source of traffic by a mile, but AI answers are changing how many people click through.
- 91.4%
of UK searches happen on Google. Bing is second with 6.1%.
Source: Statcounter, September 2026 - 68%
of US Google searches ended without a click (January to April 2026), up from 60.45% in 2024.

What it means for you
Ranking still matters, but a top position is worth fewer clicks than it used to be. The winners will be the brands that are cited inside the AI answer as well as ranked below it.
AI referral traffic
AI tools send far fewer visits than Google, but the traffic is growing quickly and behaves differently.
- +101%
growth in ChatGPT referral traffic between January and August 2026.
Source: BrightEdge, September 2026 - 95.1%
of AI referral traffic came from ChatGPT in August 2026. Gemini (2.4%), Perplexity (1.1%) and Claude (0.8%) shared the rest.
Source: BrightEdge, September 2026 - 0.32%
share of website visits referred by ChatGPT across 101,574 sites in May 2026, a record high but still a small slice of traffic.
Source: SE Ranking, July 2026 - 60%
of AI-referred visits land on a homepage, compared with 17% of organic search visits.
Source: SE Ranking, July 2026 - 7% vs 5%
conversion rate on transactional sites for visitors referred by ChatGPT, compared with visitors from Google.
Source: Similarweb, 2026 - 86%
of AI referral traffic in the UK comes from ChatGPT.
Source: SE Ranking, July 2026
What it means for you
AI traffic is small but valuable, and it often lands on your homepage. Make sure your homepage explains clearly who you are, what you do and where, because that's where AI-referred visitors arrive.
What AI search cites (GEO)
What the research says about which brands and pages AI tools choose to mention and cite.
- 0.664
correlation between branded web mentions and visibility in AI Overviews, the strongest factor studied. Backlinks scored 0.218.
Source: Ahrefs (75,000 brands), May 2025, updated 2026 - 38%
of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in Google's top ten, down from 76% in Ahrefs' 2025 study. 31% come from beyond the top 100.
Ahrefs notes the two studies are not directly comparable because its citation detection has improved.
Source: Ahrefs (863,000 keywords), 2026 - Up to 40%
higher visibility in generative AI answers from adding citations, quotations and statistics to content.
Source: Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", 2023 - 88%
of Google AI summaries cite three or more sources.
Source: Pew Research Center, July 2025
What it means for you
Links still help, but being talked about across the web, and publishing clear, well-sourced answers, matters even more for AI visibility. Ranking in Google's top ten no longer guarantees you'll be cited.
Local search and reviews
How people choose local businesses, and how fast AI is becoming part of that decision.
- 97%
of consumers read reviews for local businesses.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026 - 68%
will only use a business with four stars or more, up from 55% in 2025. 31% want 4.5 stars or more.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026 - 74%
only pay attention to reviews written in the last three months.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026 - 47%
won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026 - 63%
of people who use AI tools trust their business recommendations. ChatGPT (31%) and Google AI Mode (23%) are the most used for this.
Source: BrightLocal, March 2026 - 83% → 71%
Google's share of local review use fell in a year, while Apple Maps nearly doubled from 14% to 27%.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026
What it means for you
For local businesses, reviews are the deciding factor, and fresh ones matter most. AI tools now summarise those reviews too, so a steady flow of genuine, recent reviews pays off twice.
Speed, and a prediction worth checking
Two numbers that are quoted a lot, with the context they usually miss.
- +8.4%
more retail conversions, and 10.1% more travel conversions, from a 0.1 second faster mobile site.
Source: Deloitte and Google, "Milliseconds make millions", 2020 - -25%
drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026, predicted by Gartner in 2024. Google has since reported search queries at an all-time high, alongside fast-growing AI Mode use.
Source: Gartner, February 2024
What it means for you
Fast websites still win, and search isn't dying. It's changing. Plan for both Google and AI search rather than betting on one.
How we choose these stats
We only include figures from named studies, original research or official announcements, and we link to each one so you can check it. Where a study only covers the US, we say so. Some figures come from different samples and methods, so treat comparisons between them as directional rather than exact. We review this page regularly and update the date at the top when we do.
SEO and AI search: common questions
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
Yes. Google still handles more than 91% of UK searches, and AI tools lean heavily on content that search engines already trust. What has changed is that ranking alone is no longer enough. You also need to be cited and mentioned in AI answers, so the best approach covers SEO and AI search together.
What is a zero-click search?
A search where the person gets their answer on the results page and doesn't click through to any website. SparkToro's 2026 study found 68% of US Google searches ended this way, partly because of AI Overviews.
What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?
GEO is the work of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews to find, understand, trust and recommend. It builds on SEO with clear, quotable content, structured data and brand mentions across the web.
How much traffic does AI search send to websites?
Still a small share. SE Ranking measured ChatGPT at 0.32% of website visits in May 2026, a record high. But it is growing fast, with BrightEdge reporting ChatGPT referrals more than doubling between January and August 2026, and those visitors tend to convert well.
Can I use these statistics on my own website?
Yes, please do. We just ask that you credit and link to this page as the source, and to the original study where you quote a specific figure.
